Digitalni tahograf and Stoneridge are proudly introducing the SE500 Smart 2, the second generation of high-quality smart tachographs. Designed to meet the standards of the European Union’s Mobility Package, it also sets new benchmarks for the road transport sector.
The Mobility Package is a set of European laws and regulations for the transport sector, containing new rules aimed at improving drivers’ social conditions, enhancing road safety, and providing equal access to European markets. In line with Annex Smart 2 (EU 2016/799), prescribed by Regulation 2021/1228, the European Union requires a technically enhanced tachograph for better monitoring and implementation of standards, leading to the development of the SE5000 Smart 2 tachograph by Stoneridge Electronics.
The second generation of smart tachographs will be mandatory for installation:
- From August 21, 2023 – in all new freight vehicles (N2 and N3 categories) and new buses (M2 and M3 categories) first registered in the EU,
- By December 31, 2024 – in all freight vehicles (N2 and N3 categories) and buses (M2 and M3 categories) performing international transport, which currently have analogue or digital tachographs,
- By August 21, 2025 – in all freight vehicles (N2 and N3 categories) and buses (M2 and M3 categories) performing international transport, which currently have first-generation smart tachographs,
- From July 1, 2026 – in all freight vehicles (N1 category) with a maximum permissible weight of 2.5 to 3.5 tons, performing international transport.
BENEFITS FOR DRIVERS
The second-generation smart tachographs bring numerous advantages for drivers and transporters, including:
- Simplified user interface for drivers (especially for easier manual entry),
- Simplified display of driver working hours on the tachograph screen,
- Improved DDS system depending on the type of transport for which the tachograph is used, selected during tachograph activation by the workshop; fast wireless data transfer on demand for remote data download from the card; easier tachograph software updates in case of changes to rules,
- Updated DSRC system for remote communication between the tachograph or vehicle and supervisory bodies without stopping the vehicle for more efficient mobile worker working time control,
- Automatic recording of border crossings without any additional action required from the driver,
- Manual registration of vehicle location during loading/unloading activities or a shortcut button for quick entry of loading/unloading activity,
- Use of external devices or Bluetooth connections with mobile phones,
- Easier understanding of tachograph printouts and recorded driver activities and other data.
The Smart 2 tachograph supports DTD – a device for automatic data retrieval from digital tachographs, enabling complete oversight of drivers’ working hours.
- Regular data downloads (ddd. File)
- Data analysis from the tachograph to increase driver working time utilization,
- Monthly review of driver activities,
- Working hours by country,
- List of violations with penalty amounts.
New SMART 2 cards for tachographs started being issued in July 2023, with data storage for up to 56 days. Only new cards will be able to store new data generated by this tachograph (primarily vehicle position data recorded via GNSS system).
You can replace existing tachographs and install new SMART 2 tachographs at any Digitalni tahograf office in Zagreb (Zagreb Lučko and Zagreb East – Čavićeva bb), and in Varaždin, Rijeka, Osijek, Žminj, Zadar, and Split.
Digitalni tahograf employees are available for any additional questions related to all types of tachographs, driver working time records, mobile worker training, as well as other business segments such as vehicle tracking, and service and geometry for commercial vehicles.
