FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Tachographs

If the analog tachograph does not record the time on the tachograph chart, at the end of the working day, you need to properly mark the driver’s working day on the back of the tachograph chart in the time and symbol sections (be sure to note the activities of driving, work, rest, and availability). If it is a digital tachograph, the driver must print out the data from the tachograph for the vehicle at the end of their working day, sign the printout, and write the reason for this action (e.g., card removed during driving).

The driver’s card stores data for up to 5-6 months, depending on the amount of activity recorded on it. It works in such a way that the newest data is saved over the oldest data (like a circular process), meaning that the data is not erased when it is downloaded from the driver’s card.

The driver is required to keep records for 0-24 hours, 365 days a year. When the driver is on rest or engaged in other activities, they have the option to record this information using tachograph charts (manual entry on the back), via the driver card (manual input on the card), or through an activity certificate issued by the employer.
It is important to note that for up to two days, police officers tolerate recording off-duty days on tachograph charts; however, these charts should not be used in the tachograph for more than 24 hours.

A driver is not allowed to drive a vehicle without a driver card, except in cases where the card has been stolen or is faulty. In such cases, the driver may drive without the card for a maximum of 15 days. After each day, the driver must print out the data from the tachograph, sign it, and provide the reason for driving without the driver card.

It is important to ensure that every reduced weekly rest is compensated for no later than 3 weeks after it was taken. The compensation of weekly rest periods is not related to the use of reduced weekly rests.

The One Minute Rule is a feature available in newer versions of digital tachographs (from 2012 onwards) that allows the driver card to not record driving for certain small movements of the vehicle. The tachograph will record the activity that is predominant within 1 minute.

EXAMPLE:

27 seconds of driving – 33 seconds of rest – the tachograph records REST.

In older versions, the tachograph would record DRIVING for any small movement (every movement was counted as 1 minute of driving).

45 seconds of driving – 15 seconds of rest – the tachograph records DRIVING
